The Cary Arts Center is a repurposed school. The original Cary Academy was a high school serving the youth in the surrounding area during the late 1800s. It was later the first public high school in the state, later becoming Cary Elementary School. When a new school was built, the Town purchased the school from Wake County Public Schools. In 2011 the renovated the building opened to include a 400-seat theater, 2 gallery spaces and many classrooms for visual and performing arts.
