How I Used Procreate to Create a Stunning Pet Composition and Painting: A Unique Illustrator's Perspective

Writer: Lindsey ChesterLindsey Chester

Creating art can often feel like an adventure filled with creativity and collaboration. I recently had the pleasure of using Procreate to design a unique pet composition that turned into a beautiful painting. This creative journey involved three distinct cats, with my client actively participating in the composition process. Let me share how I transformed this idea into a vivid artwork.

Understanding Procreate

Procreate is a robust digital illustration app that provides a wide range of tools for creating stunning artwork. It offers functions such as brushes, colors, and layers that allow artists to express their vision. Its user-friendly interface makes it easy for both seasoned professionals and beginners.

Using Procreate for my pet composition gave me the freedom to explore various art styles quickly. For instance, I could try out a watercolor effect or a sleek digital look without needing different materials. In fact, research shows that digital tools can improve an artist's workflow by up to 50%, allowing for rapid experimentation.

The Initial Concept

To kick off my project, I brainstormed ideas for the pet composition. My client was commissioning a painting as a gift for her son, a huge cat lover. Each cat is an individual. Understanding how to convey their unique personalities was vital to me.

She sent me links to several folders of photos of each cat. Many were not so great. Once I reviewed them all I chose the following two to work with.

Image Collection and Selection

With the initial images collected, I turned to Procreate to refine them. Each cat had its own posture and expression, and I wanted to highlight these unique characteristics while ensuring a cohesive composition.

Procreate's layering feature let me isolate each cat easily. For example, I took the photo of the two cats and layered it over the image of the single tabby. I love his side-eye expression! By adjusting sizes and positions, I created a balanced scene where each cat complemented the others. The result was visually appealing and ensured that no single cat overwhelmed the composition.

Collaborative Feedback

After crafting the mock-up, I eagerly shared it with my client for her feedback. This step was crucial, as her perspective enriched the design. It was important for her to feel involved in capturing the essence of her cherished pets.

She provided valuable suggestions, such as enhancing the vibrant colors to reflect the cats' personalities. For instance, we increased the brightness of one cat's golden fur to make it truly pop. This input not only shaped the final artwork but also deepened my understanding of how to represent pet traits visually.

The colors have been lightened. I started to use Procreate brushes, transparency and layers. This added highlights that did not exist in the original photos. I lightened up the overall composition.

Fine-Tuning the Composition

Incorporating my client's feedback, I fine-tuned the composition. I adjusted colors, shading, and highlights to create depth. For instance, using a gradient of colors in the background lent the piece a warm glow, reminiscent of a cozy afternoon light.

Procreate's tools allowed for detailed adjustments. Subtle brush strokes mimicked the texture of each cat’s fur, while layering techniques brought the artwork to life. My goal was to evoke the joy and warmth pets bring into our lives, and the changes were instrumental in achieving that feeling.

Transitioning to Traditional Painting

Once my client approved the digital composition, it was time to move to traditional painting. This was a thrilling phase, as I transitioned my digital work to canvas. I felt confident, knowing I had a well-crafted plan to guide me.

Setting up my easel, I carefully selected paints that matched the digital colors. This step required focus and patience, especially since I wanted to replicate the vibrant emotions from the digital version accurately.

The Painting Process

As I began painting, I realized how much my digital work had taught me about color blending and brush techniques. Each stroke became intentional, mirroring the detailed elements I created in Procreate. Combining digital and traditional methods enhanced the overall process.

Watching the painting evolve inspired me. I embraced any imperfections in my traditional techniques, celebrating the unique look they brought to the piece. The final painting beautifully captured the spirit and personality of the three cats, leaving me thrilled with the outcome.

Reflections on the Experience

The project, from concept to finished painting, was a remarkable blend of technology, traditional art, and teamwork. Using Procreate not only helped me create an eye-catching pet composition but also transformed it into a heartfelt piece that resonates with both my client and me.

Creating art for pet lovers like my client allowed me to celebrate the special bond we share with our furry friends. As I completed this project, I felt grateful for the insights gained and the joy of accurately portraying the essence of these three cats.

If you are an artist looking to explore new techniques or a pet lover wanting to transform your pet's essence into art, I strongly suggest trying Procreate. It opens up endless creative possibilities and ensures that each piece reflects the deep connections we share with our pets.

If you have a project that needs a little editing before the painting process begins, contact me. I would love to do another project like this for you.

The final painting measures 8" x 8" and was painted on a birch board panel 1-1/2" deep.
